Lechuza is another painting in my cryptozoology series. In mexican folklore, Lechuza is an Owl shape shifting witch. They appear as a giant owl or black bird the size of a human or as a creature with the body of a bird and a face of an old woman. Lechuzas are said to be a creature that was once a woman who was wronged or murdered by villagers and is now seeking revenge so they are said to prey on people who they think have done wrong and lure them out with their cries, which is said to sound like a baby crying. There are other variations of this legend of course, ranging from Lechuza selling her soul to the devil, to being a familiar, to being a minion of the devil. Some claims also wonder if Lechuza is not of this world at all and if they could possibly be alien in origin as some sightings of Lechuza coincide with ufo and alien abductions. In any case Lechuza is said to come out at dusk or nightfall, many people believe in her existence and claim to see her flying over houses and in the moonlight. Some have also claimed to have been attacked by lechuza.
My take on Lechuza is a woman with the beak of a bird, feathers scattered all over her skin and large owl/bird wings with a more classic, fantasy witch attire.
Do you believe?
